Volleyball
team drops two to California, Gannon

EDINBORO
(Oct. 5) -- The Fighting Scots lost both games at home this
week against California (PA) and Gannon. Edinboro lost on
Oct. 3 and 4 in three matches each night. Edinboro is now
12-11 on the season.
There
were a few good highlights this past week for the Scots vollleyball
team. Junior middle hitter Jenna Newman passed 1,000 career
kills this past weekend at the Shippensburg Invitational.
Newman now has 1,069 career kills.
On Oct.
3 against Cal, Edinboro started off strong but couldn't hold
on for the win. The first game went to Cal by a final score
of 30-27. In the second match of the night, Edinboro had a
16-7 lead at one point but lost eventually 30-28. Cal took
game three, which was another close match, 31-29. Edinboro
dropped to 2-3 in the PSAC West while Cal improved to 4-1.
Leading
the Scots statistically was Newman with 15 kills and Jenna
Benkleman added nine kills. Samantha Kuehner had nine digs
for the Scots while Amelia Robinson added seven digs. Ashley
Cottengim had 36 assists while Olivia Williams had two solo
and one assisted blocks at the net.
Edinboro's
local rival Gannon University visited McComb Fieldhouse on
Oct. 4 with record of 5-10. But Edinboro had a combined 26
unforced errors for the evening. Gannon took the game in three
matches 30-23, 30-27 and 30-20.
Newman
had 14 kills on the evening while Williams added 13 kills.
Benkleman had nine defensive digs while Cottengim added 37
assists. Robinson had two serving aces.
Edinboro
will have four games in the next few days as they travel to
the Clarion Days Inn Tournament on Oct. 6-7. Edinboro will
face Davis & Elkins and East Stroudsburg on Oct. 6 and
Point Park and Geneva on Oct. 7. Edinboro will not be at home
again until Oct. 17 versus Lock Haven.
