General McLane Lancers grab Class AAA District 10 crown

By Josh Kulesza/Boro Online

ERIE (Nov. 18) – By controlling the ball and keeping the high-powered Strong Vincent offense off the field, the General McLane Lancers captured the Class AAA District 10 title, winning 19-7 over the Colonels on Friday, Nov. 17, at Veterans Stadium.

It is GM's second straight D-10 crown and their third in five years.

McLane set the pace all night, running 69 plays from scrimmage to only 35 for Strong Vincent. GM also outgained the Colonels, but by a much closer margin -- 329 to 302 yards total.

Strong Vincent received the opening kickoff and quickly moved the ball down the field, first with a pass play to the Lancer 43 and then with a run that seemed headed for a touchdown. However, Lancers Drew Astorino and Bobby Stauffer hit the runner, forcing a fumble that Astorino recovered at the 2 yard line.

In fact, the Colonels fumbled three times in the game, losing two of them. And although McLane fumbled twice, they retained possession both times.

The Lancers then chewed up more than 10 minutes off the game clock on a 98-yard drive for a touchdown, which came on a Stauffer to Shawn Walker pass play. That put the Lancers up 6-0 after a failed extra point.

The Lancers second touchdown came in the second quarter on a 35-yard run by Dan Skelton. General McLane took the 13-0 lead into halftime.

In the third quarter, it looked as if Strong Vincent might have regained some momentum when Maurice Williams hooked up with receiver Robert Joyce for a 52-yard touchdown.

However, the General McLane offense chewed up more  time when they used a 14-play drive to march down the field and score once again. The drive was finished off by Astorino’s 3-yard run to make it 19-7.

Ryan Skelton led the Lancers with 117 yards on 19 carries. Dan Skelton also had 13 carries for 81 yards.

Williams had 78 yards on 13 carries to lead the Colonels. Star running back Donte Harden was held in check all night, only managing 57 yards on 14 carries.

General McLane (10-2) will move on to play District 8 champion Oliver (11-2) on Friday, Dec. 1, at a site and time yet to be determined. The Colonels ended their season at 8-4.
