ERIE (Nov. 18) – By controlling the ball and keeping the high-powered Strong Vincent offense off the field, the General McLane Lancers captured the Class AAA District 10 title, winning 19-7 over the Colonels on Friday, Nov. 17, at Veterans Stadium.
It is GM's second straight D-10 crown and their third in five years.
McLane set the pace all night, running 69 plays from scrimmage to only 35 for Strong Vincent. GM also outgained the Colonels, but by a much closer margin -- 329 to 302 yards total.
Strong Vincent received the opening kickoff and quickly moved the ball down the field, first with a pass play to the Lancer 43 and then with a run that seemed headed for a touchdown. However, Lancers Drew Astorino and Bobby Stauffer hit the runner, forcing a fumble that Astorino recovered at the 2 yard line.
In fact, the Colonels fumbled three times in the game, losing two of them. And although McLane fumbled twice, they retained possession both times.
The Lancers then chewed up more than 10 minutes off the game clock on a 98-yard drive for a touchdown, which came on a Stauffer to Shawn Walker pass play. That put the Lancers up 6-0 after a failed extra point.
The Lancers second touchdown came in the second quarter on a 35-yard run by Dan Skelton. General McLane took the 13-0 lead into halftime.
