FEATURE SPEAKERS
Friday Luncheon: "The State of Working Pennsylvania and the State of Economics in Pennsylvania"
- Dr. Stephen Herzenberg, Executive Director, Keystone Research Center. The Keystone Research Center in Harrisburg is a new think tank based in Harrisburg and conducts research on the Pennsylvania economy and labor market. Stephen Herzenberg holds a Ph.D. in economics from MIT. He previously worked at the U.S. Dept. of Labor, where he served as one of the lead U.S. negotiators for the labor side agreement to NAFTA. Immediately prior to joining Keystone he directed a major study of the service economy at the Office of Technology Assessment, a non-partisan Congressional think tank and taught at Rutgers. Dr. Herzenberg has published on topics that include the auto industry, work organization, and the labor market. He was the author of The State of Working Pennsylvania, released by Keystone on labor day of 1996.
Friday Panel Discussion (Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia) "Current Issues in Monetary Policy" (Leonard Nakamura) and "Is the U.S. Economy Really Growing Too Slowly?" (Richard Lang)
- Dr.
Leonard Nakamura, Economic Advisor. Dr. Nakamura has been an economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia since 1988. He has taught at Rutgers University and lectured at the Wharton School. He has also been an economist for The Conference Board and Citibank. He received his B.A. from Swarthmore College and his M.A. and Ph.D. from Princeton University. His primary area of expertise is banking and credit markets. His work in national economic statistics dates back to the 1970s, when he was a consultant to the Rees Commission on Productivity Measurement, while working for The Conference Board.
- Dr.
Richard W. Lang, Senior Vice President and Director of Research. Dr. Lang is a Senior Vice President and Director of Economic Research at the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia. As Research Director, he heads a staff of economists who conduct research on the national and regional economies, and on banking and financial markets. He also is responsible for the Statistics Division, which compiles a variety of data from banks and thrifts, and he oversees both the Public Affairs Department and the Community and Consumer Affairs Department. Dr. Lang joined the Philadelphia Reserve Bank in 1980 after spending four years with the St. Louis Federal Reserve Bank. He received his bachelor's degree in economics and mathematics from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, and went on to obtain the Master's and Ph.D. degrees in economics at The Ohio State University.
Friday Dinner: "Pennsylvania State Budget: Current Spending Patterns and Future Trend."
- Henry A. Olsen, III. President, The Commonwealth Foundation
. Mr. Olsen has been the President of the Commonwealth Foundation since December 1996. Before that he served as the Foundation's Executive Director. Prior to joining the Foundation, Mr. Olsen, an attorney, practiced with the firm of Dechert, Price & Rhoads in Philadelphia. He is a graduate of the University of Chicago Law School, where he served as Comment Editor of the Law Review, and of Claremont McKenna College. He has also worked as an assistant to various state legislators. His specialties included knowledge of state government issues including state budget issues, government funding, tax issues, and private property rights.
Founded in 1871, Shippensburg University is a member of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. It is a comprehensive, regional university offering both graduate and undergraduate programs. The university is conveniently located in the Cumberland Valley of south-central Pennsylvania, approximately three hours from Philadelphia, two hours from Washington, D.C., and one hour from Harrisburg. The beautiful 200-acre campus blends traditional and modern architecture, providing students with a comfortable and progressive environment.

Shippensburg University, with easy access to Interstate 81 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike, is a quick ride from anywhere in the Central Pennsylvania and Middle Atlantic Region.
If your point of departure is:
- East of Shippensburg
: Use Pennsylvania Turnpike Exit 16 (Carlisle), follow signs to I-81 south, take I-81 to exit 10. Turn right and follow signs to Shippensburg University campus.
- West of Shippensburg
: Use Pennsylvania Turnpike Exit 15 (Blue Mountain), take Route 696 south toward Shippensburg, follow signs to Shippensburg University campus.
- North of Shippensburg
: Use I-81 or U.S. Route 11 south (Exit 10 from I-81). Upon entering Shippensburg, follow signs to Shippensburg University campus.
- South of Shippensburg
: Use I-81 north (or U.S. Route 11), take Exit 9, turn left and follow signs to Shippensburg University campus.
