Proceedings of PEA Annual Conference
Each year, the PEA publishes the Proceedings of its annual conference.
Papers of presenters as well as discussants may be included in the proceedings. Only those papers that
are actually presented can be included in the proceedings. Please note
that the PEA reserves the right to reject any paper that is judged inappropriate
for publication in the Proceedings. Submission
deadline is now past.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR PREPARING PROCEEDINGS
ABSTRACT
Please follow these format instructions carefully. Your paper will be not printed in
the Pennsylvania Economic Association Proceedings unless you conform to these guidelines.
No paper may exceed 12 pages (including appendices and references). Edit your paper if
necessary to satisfy this limit. These guidelines are an example of what your paper should
look like when submitted.
FORMAT INSTRUCTIONS
Title
The title of your paper should be in bold type, all caps, single-spaced, and centered
across the top of both columns on the first page. The paper must be typed in 10 point
type, Times Roman font.
Authors
The author(s), affiliation(s), and complete address(es) should be single-spaced and
centered on the second line below the title. Do not use titles such as Dr., Professor,
etc.
Headings
Use bold type for all headings. First-level headings should be centered and
capitalized. Subheadings should be flush left with initial caps. Please do not use more
than two levels of headings. Place a one line space between the heading and the text.
Abstract
An abstract of approximately 100 words should precede the paper. The heading
"ABSTRACT" should appear centered above the single-spaced abstract. No space
should appear between the heading and the abstract text.
Body
The body should be single-spaced, 10 point type, Times Roman font. Print on a
high-quality laser printer. The hard copies should be camera ready. (Programs that print
mathematical formulas in italic type with slightly smaller font sizes are acceptable.)
All paragraphs should begin flush left (no indent). Justify the margins. Double-space
between paragraphs, and before and after headings. Triple-space after the last author's
address in the title before beginning the abstract.
Margins
- The distance from the tope of the paper to the top of the first line should be 1.0"
- The distance from the bottom of the last line of type on the page to the bottom edge of
the paper should be 1.0".
- Each column should be 3.44".
- The left margin should be .69". The right margin should be .68".
- The margin between the two columns of text should be .25".
Page numbers
Do not type in page numbers - pencil numbers on back of pages.
In-Text referencing
Use the author(s) last names followed by the year of the publication in parentheses,
i.e., Becker(1993), Blinder and Solow (1994), Sweeney et. Al.(1983). If more than one
reference is cited use the following format: (Meikle, 1990; Carry, 1991; Sykes, 1994).
Equations
All equations should be placed on separate lines (with a line space between the
equation and the text) and numbered. Equation numbers should be placed in parentheses and
aligned against the right margin.
Figures and Tables
Figures and tables should be placed at the end of the body of the text and before the
endnotes, appendices and references. They need not be double columned. Each table should
be headed by a table or figure number and title. All figures and tables are to be done in
a professional manner and must meet the criterion of photo reproduction. Symbols or parts
of a figure that cannot be produced by computer must be drawn in carefully in black ink.
If necessary, you may photo-reduce figures and tables and insert them into the paper. Use
paste or glue sticks, not tape, to paste down. Avoid paste ups when possible.
ENDNOTES
Omit all footnotes if possible. Otherwise, report the footnotes at the end of the
paper and call the section "Endnotes".
APPENDICES
Appendices should immediately follow the endnotes section of the paper (if you have
one). Otherwise, appendices should immediately follow the body of the paper. Use a
first-level heading "APPENDIX"). If there is more than one appendix, number each
on consecutively and include the number in the first-level heading.
REFERENCES
References should be listed at the end of the paper (after endnotes and appendices).
This section should have a first-level heading "REFERENCES" and followed by a
single line space. Entries should appear in alphabetical order by the first author's last
name.
The following are some examples:
Fels, Rendigs. 1990. Teaching students how to learn economics. In The principles of
economics course, ed. P. Saunders and W. Walstad. St Lousi, Mo: McGraw-Hill.
Johnson, D.W., R. Johnson, and K. Smith. 1991. Active learning: Cooperation in the
college classroom. Edina, MN: Interaction Book Company.
Lopus, J. and N. Maxwell. 1995. Teaching tools: Should we teach microeconomic
principles before macroeconomic principles? Economic Inquiry. 33, April 1995:
326-50.
If the paper is too long to include references, the author(s) may substitute the
following note for the list of references: "References available upon request from
[Name of Author]."
DISCUSSANT INSTRUCTIONS
Discussants are also required to format their paper in double-columns with 10 point
type, with Times Roman font. The same margins should be observed and page numbers should
be omitted. Discussant comments must be limited to two pages. The first line of the title
should read: "DISCUSSANT COMMENTS:" The second line should be the title of the
paper on which they are commenting. The title should be capitalized, single-spaced, bold,
and centered. Skip one line and follow by name, address, and affiliation in the manner
described above. Headings may be used in the discussant comments. The discussants should
not have any abstract, subheadings or appendices. Endnotes, references and figures are to
be avoided. If in-text references and a reference section are necessary, the same format
described above should be used.
Please submit a hard copy (regular mail) and a disk with MS Word (or
WordPerfect) file (or via e-mail attachment) of your paper or discussions to:
