8 February 2008

Dear Tri-Beta advisors and members,

Greetings from the Edinboro University's Alpha Chi Chapter of Beta Beta Beta, host of the 2008 District Convention.  The regional meeting is scheduled to be held at Edinboro University at the Frank G. Pogue Student Center Friday through Saturday, 11–12 April, 2008.

This packet provides the information needed to attend this year’s meeting. Included are registration forms (separate forms for faculty and students), a tentative schedule of program events, abstract instructions, information on the poster/platform presentations, lodging information, and directions to EUP.

There will be an informal social Friday evening the 11th from ~ 7:00 to 9:30 p.m. for both faculty and students.  A keynote address, presentations, and luncheon and awards are scheduled for Saturday the 12th.

Saturday, Dr. Jim Reichman will give the keynote address:  "The Democratization of Information: Collaboration annd Cooperation in the Digital World."  Dr. Reichmen is recently retired Director of the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (www.nceas.ucsb.edu) and Professor in the Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Marine Biology at the University of California, Santa Barbara.  The Center annually hosts more than 700 visiting scientists, six resident sabbatical scientists, and 18 postdoctoral associates who use existing information to address important ecological questions.  He is a past President of the American Society of Mammalogists and Chair of the Board of Directors of the BIOSIS Corporation (Biological Abstracts).  He has served as editor for several journals, on a number of NSF panels, as Director of the Ecology Program at NSF, as Associate Vice Provost for Research and Director of Konza Prairie Research Natural Area at Kansas State University, and as Assistant Director for Research of the National Biological Service (Department of Interior).  Reichman received a Ph.D. from Northern Arizona University in 1974 and worked as a postdoctoral associate at the University of Utah in 1975.  Reichman’s research focuses on the influence of the spatial patterns of animal disturbances on the restoration of plant communities and natural landscapes.  A second area of research involves an analysis of long term food storage strategies by animals that cache food during periods when it is unavailable of costly to secure.

The deadline for registration and abstract submission is Friday, 28 March 2008.  All abstracts must be submitted as e-mail attachments in Microsoft Word.  Details for abstract submission are included in this registration packet.

PLATFORM / POSTER PRESENTATIONS

Tri-beta members are invited to present either a platform talk or a poster presentation at the annual meeting.

Platform (oral) presentations will last a total of 14 minutes, including discussion.  At 10 and 11 minutes, the moderator will remind the presenter of the time.  At 12 minutes, the presentation should end.  The remainder of the time, up to 14 minutes, will be used for questions.  Your presentation will be assigned to one of the sessions listed in the proceedings.  As far as we are able, talks will be organized according to topic or subject.  Each room will be equipped with a PC computer and digital projector (for PowerPoint presentations).  If you are a Mac user make sure that you save your material in a format that will load and run on a PC platform.  There will be a CD drive available with each computer, but a flash drive is probably the most reliable means of importing your presentation. A laser pointer will be provided.  We will not accommodate individual laptops as an alternative. There will be an opportunity to import and test your presentation during the registration period and it is highly recommended that you take the opportunity to do so.

Poster presentations.  Researchers presenting posters are expected to be available at their poster display during their assigned time indicated in the proceedings.  Table space will be provided for posters.  Please make sure your poster is free-standing (i.e., on a tri-fold posterboard) as there are no bulletin boards or places to pin or tape posters.

Be sure to read the abstract preparation instructions carefullyAbstracts will only be accepted as e-mail attachments.  Please see Abstract Preparation Guidelines for instructions concerning abstract submittal.

Annexins are a family of Ca+-dependent phospholipid binding proteins that are ubiquitously distributed across all phyla and all tissues examined to date and their exact role in cells still remain a mystery.  Previous work in our laboratory has shown that annexins…
