Summer Internship Links
There are internships available in the surrounding region offered by the Department of Protection, the Environmental Protection Agency. a few other local organizations. See Dr. Thumser for more information on these. Here are a few links with information on summer research internships that are on the national level.
| The following two links are to the two biggest organizations that fund summer undergraduate research programs. They have comprehensive lists that can guide you through to individual schools or organizations offering research opportunities. | |

Here are some lists of internships maybe less confusing then those listed above. However, these lists are not all-inclusive. |

Most internships have deadlines from mid-January to March. I would advise you to start during your Christmas vacation because when the school year starts, you may not have time to finish as many applications as you would like. There is no charge for applying (except for envelopes and stamps), but many require essays that will take time.
Most internships do not require any previous research experience, but prior research experience will be an asset for those internships that are highly competitive (e.g. East Coast and West Coast). I would advise to apply to many internships that are in the South and Mid-West in addition to those internships located at the two coasts.
Do not worry if you are still a freshman. I know many people who have been accepted to internships as freshmen. Many programs accept freshmen although some would like those with greater science background.
Most internships also like to accept students who have not decided where to go. This is because a majority of the funding for their internships will come from their graduate schools in the hope that they can recruit top-notch students.
Lastly, if you are an international student (no permanent residency status or citizenship), finding a research position will be much tougher. That is a fact because internship funded by the government can only spend their money on permanent residents and citizens. So organizations have to get funding elsewhere. Not only will you be competing for few positions, but you will also may be competing with people from all over the world. But you can always try!
